I can fall asleep on a Motorcycle!

By Serena Beck

I can fall asleep on a motorcycle. A simple statement and yet a surprising and rather dangerous one. There are the obvious facts such as I could fall off I could pull the driver down with me since I am only a passenger.

On the afternoon of Saturday, July 14, 2007 after enjoying a hot afternoon at Ma-me-o beach in the 30 ÂșC weather, I enjoyed a hot 45 minute motorcycle ride back to Edmonton.

We started out on the black asphalt and you could see the heat lines rising off the pavement and slithering like a snake through the hot air. When the bike’s cooler (the radiator) kicked in to try and cool the bike’s engine, Colin and I both received a hot steamy blast up the cuffs of our jeans.
After about 20 minutes, my eyes began to droop. When on the bike, the wind is a lullaby. Its sweet tune droning on slowly puts me to sleep. I really did fall sound asleep and I dreamt I was falling as I heard a rhythmic tapping like a drum; it was my helmet smacking into Colin’s helmet. I was also startled wide awake when the bike swerved to avoid a pot hole and my butt slid an inch off the side of the seat. I stayed awake the rest of the way home, but I can’t guarantee I won’t fall asleep again the next time.
